Artist's Statement - Arcs & Bands, 1985-92

My abstract work began with a series of charcoal gesture drawings to indulge a visceral impulse to 'dance' with circular and arcing motions across paper, and fill the space with rhythmic lines.  In translating the circular and linear marks on paper to paint and canvas, I experimented with a simple palette limited to three to four colors, and played with the emergence and disappearance of the forming and evolving shapes, and with the interplay of color, line and shape.
